Went to see Avatar on Tuesday night. First off, I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn’t seen it. The 3D experience is, simply, amazing. The story is a little bit cliche and predictable in spots, but that didn’t detract at all from our enjoyment of the movie. I won’t give any spoilers, other than to say that the movie is kind of a space western. Go see it for yourself if you want to know more.

Let me start by saying that i’m not really looking for work right now. But i’ve always maintained a resume online, and have a few RSS feeds set up with the BC Technology job database, so new openings show up in my news feeds.

Perhaps it’s not surprising that people find the time to post about their neat hacks over the holidays, when they’re snowed in and can’t do anything else anyway. Here are some cool tips for photographers to help save money (in some cases) and improve your picture quality.

I was reminded today of the 49th anniversary of Black Friday, the day Diefenbaker killed the Avro Arrow. I replied to the person who reminded me that it was a beautiful plane that unfortunately never lived up to it’s expectations. That prompted a quick reply from another friend telling me to go find an article on the topic in the Ontario P.Eng. society’s magazine, Dimensions, if I really believed that. A quick google search later and I found the article.

We listed our townhouse for sale, and sold it three days before the open house for $200 less than our asking price. We looked at a couple of dozen houses in North Delta, then Surrey, Newton, and finally Langley. And finally we chose one within a healthy walk of Langey Airport. All the paperwork is done, now we get to relax for a month or so before we pack. Read the rest of this entry »

Ah, spring. The grass is green, the weather is getting warmer, and a young man’s fancy turns to thoughts of how to pimp his ride.

Wouldn’t it be fun to turn this island into a private resort? I’m amazed nobody has done it in the last 30 years since it was abandoned. Be sure to watch the short documentary if you have a spare 15 minutes. It’s fascinating.

After a long hiatus punctuated with fits of annoyance at not getting into the workshop, i’m finally working on the plane again. Saturday, Sunday, and Monday night were spent in the workshop making parts, fitting parts, trying to understand the instructions, etc. But it’s once again coming together.

Probably the most interesting lecture i’ll attend at SFU this year (especially considering i’m not a student, I just take the same bus up the hill every morning)… Cory Doctorow came to SFU to give a lecture called “The Totalitarian Urge: total information awareness and the cosmic billiards.”
